Bertha M. Elder, 89, passed away at 7:04 A.M. Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville. She was born December 4, 1923 in Ranger, IN to the late John and Ella (Rogier) Naviaux.
She was married on September 20, 1947 to Elton L. Elder. He preceded her in death on October 11, 1965. Also preceding her in death are brothers, Johnie and Freddie Naviaux.
At the age of 16, Bertha worked housekeeping, which she said, she followed Dr. Dukes, and every time a baby was born they called her to help the family. She retired from General Electric in 1986 after 41 years in the motor dept. She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and the Perry County Humane Society. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends.
Surviving are her children, Lisa (Steven) Graham of Cannelton and Michael (Brenda) Elder of Lamar; a sister, Helen Harpenau of Dale; step-grandchildren, Heather Scruggs and Jennifer (Mike) Litherland and two step great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, April 6, 2013 at St. Paul Catholic Church. Rev. Tom Richstatter, O.F.M. will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will be at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home on Friday, April 5, 2013 from 2:00-8:00 P.M. and Saturday from 8:30-9:30 A.M.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or American Diabetes Association.
