Charles V. Kleeman, 91, of Evansville, IN passed away November 12, 2017. He was born October 19th, 1926, one of 15 children of Frank and Eleanor (Birchler) Kleeman of Tell City. Charlie was a 1944 graduate of T.C.H.S. He served his country in the Navy Air Corp, and attended The University of Notre Dame. He married Ethel Mae Briggeman in 1947 and they recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Together they raised seven children.
In 1969 Charlie founded Kleeman Construction Company. He was the owner and manager of the company until his retirement. The company was responsible for numerous commercial projects in the area including work on schools, office buildings, retail buildings, hospitals, and the renovation of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Tell City. After the company closed he served as a construction superintendent on many projects in Southern Indiana and managed work on the Perry County Courthouse and renovations to Memorial Hospital in Jasper.
He was preceded in death by his parents, twelve siblings and two daughters, Judy Cole and Becky Cullen, both of Tell City. He is survived by his wife, Ethel Mae and five children, Peggy Heubner, Randall Kleeman, Jane (Glen) Yancy, Ann Pryor and Amy Strobel. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren, Mark (Dannelle) Haller, Matthew Haller, Sarah Jane (Rob) Cottrell, Ben Cullen, Emily (Josh) Heim, Jake (Candice) Heubner, Aaron Haller, Kate (Marty) Heim, Abby Ritchie, Drew (Susan) Strobel, Stephen (Leah) Yancy, Tyler Wypych, Susan Yancy, Liz (Brent) Walker, Sidney Strobel, John Pryor, and Clair Strobel; and 21 great-grandchildren, Kyle Johnson, David Haller, Amy Cottrell, Addison Boerner, Jasper Heubner, Charlie Haller, TJ Cottrell, Ryan Heim, Owen Heim, Russell Heim, Oliver Heim, Reese Heim, Rebecca Ritchie, Lincoln Heim, Tristan Ritchie, Charlie Strobel, Flynn Ritchie, Desmond Ritchie, Alice Yancy, Emma Strobel, and Evelyn Walker who all called him Grandad.; a sister, Catherine Keller of Tell City, and brothers, his twin Michael Kleeman of Denver, Colorado and Francis Kleeman of Troy, Indiana.
As a young man Charlie worked as a mason helping to build Saint Paul’s Catholic Church, and was a long time member. We are mindful of this amazing man we all knew and truly loved, and we will always be grateful for the good fortune that brought him into our lives. Charlie was loved by his large family and well respected by his community. A talented woodworker, he and his wife shared a passion for making hand painted wooden Santas and shared their love of crafting with everyone.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 am Thursday, November 16 at St. Paul Catholic Church. Private burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be from 3 – 7 pm Wednesday, November 15 and from 8:30 – 9:30 am Thursday, at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home.
