James “Jim” Basham, 77, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2015. After battling cancer for nine years, the Lord opened his arms and said “Jim, it is time to come home”.was born near Gatchel on November 21, 1937 to the late Vertilla Mae (Criss) and Casper Basham.
Jim served four years in the National Guard and served in the U.S. Armed Forces for two and a half years in Stuttgart, Germany as a medic. After returning, he worked at Tell City Chair for six years and then General Electric, where he retired in August of 1996 after 29 years.
Jim was a deacon for Tell City Church of Christ and enjoyed being with his children as they participated in sports, and then later watching his grandchildren. Jim was proud of coaching his little league team, Dairy Queen to the championship in 1973, and winning. He enjoyed fishing, IU basketball, his 57 Ford, trips to NASCAR races, traveling to Canada, Mexico, Germany, and out West.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 56 years, Gale (Wright) Basham, of Evanston; daughters, Carol (Grant) Winchell of Santa Claus, Tammy Lutte of Fayetteville, NC; a son, Jim (Trish) Basham of Evanston; grandchildren, Meagan and Josh Basham, Brendan Lutte, and Zach Winchell; brother, Eugene (Annie) Basham of Decatur, AL; sister, Betty (Floyd) Harris of Hemet, CA; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM CST on Monday, April 20, 2015 at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home. Rev. Eddie Olberding will officiate. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 213. Visitation will be Sunday from 1:00-7:00 PM CST and Monday 9:00 AM until service time.
