John Kuykendall Obituary

John William Kuykendall, 74, passed away on January 22, 2012 at his home. He was born on April 23, 1937 in Decader, TX to John R. and Opal (Floyd) Kuykendall, who preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death is a brother, Bill Kuykendall and step grandson, Jeremy Clark.

John was a retired 24 year veteran with the U.S. Army. During his service he served three tours in Vietnam, nine years in Germany, with other assignments at Ft. Leavenworth, KS, Ft. Bragg and Ft. Benning, GA. During his service career he was awarded a Bronze Star and two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters and a Silver Star, Parachute Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantryman and four Overseas Service Bars while serving in Vietnam. Other awards he received were Drill Sgt. Identification Badge, ARAW Service Ribbon, three NCO Professional Developments Ribbons, ARAW Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Army Occupation Medal.

After retiring from the military, John worked as an Industrial Journey Electrician for 16 years retiring in 2001. For the past 8 years, he had worked for Charlie’s Auto Parts in Tell City, IN, when his illness forced him to retire December 29, 2011.

John was a life member of the V.F.W Post 2939.

Surviving is his life companion for 14 years, Brenda Gramelspacher, sons, Mike (Terry) Kuykendall of Elerslee, GA and Steve (Sarah) Kuykendall of Lisbon, OH; sister, Mary Lou (Bob) Simpson of Lubbock, TX, sister in law, Gerri Kuykendall of Athens, TX; step grandson, Ben (Brandy) Clark and step great grandson, Avery Clark.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Tell City VNA Hospice or the VFW Post 2939.

A private burial will be held at a later date in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison, IN.
