He was born November 24, 1931 to Paul and Clara (Kluesner). Tom was married on October 22, 1960 to Mary Jo Ruppercht. They were married for 53 years.
A 1949 graduate of Tell City High School, he then studied business at Brescia College and the University of Evansville. Tom was employed for 38 years at Citizens National Bank, later Old National Bank, retiring as Senior Vice President and Trust Officer. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul Catholic Church where he was instrumental in forming the first Parish Council. He also served as Lector and Eucharist Minister. He was a past President of Home Mutual Insurance Company and the Tell City Troy Township School Corporation, a Fourth Degree Member of Bishop Chartrand K of C Council #1172, past Director of the Perry County Hospital Foundation and the Perry County Arts Council, and past Treasurer of the Tell City Jaycees, Tell City Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Council Agencies, and St. Mary’s Cemetery Committee.
Tom enjoyed IU basketball, spending time with his family and friends, and was always ready to join a good game of cards.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Mary Jo (Rupprecht) Schaefer of Tell City; six children, David (Mona) Schaefer of Louisville, Duane (Marcia) Schaefer of Tell City, Rick Schaefer of Newburgh, Maria (Aaron) Brooks of Clarendon Hills, IL, Sam Schaefer of Tell City, and Tony (Nicole) Schaefer of Gurnee, IL; five grandchildren, Krystal Reid, Gus Schaefer, and Olivia, Eliza and Nathan Brooks; four sisters, Marie (Kermit) Foertsch of Naperville, IL, Dorothy Ress of Tell City, Jane (Ed) Paulin of Tell City, and Kate (Jerry) Fischer of Tell City
He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Charles Schaefer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM CST Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at St. Paul Catholic Church. Rev. Barnabas Gillespie, OSB will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will be at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home, Tuesday from 2:00-8:00 and Wednesday from 8:30-9:30 AM. There will be a K of C prayer service held on Tuesday at 6:30PM.
Memorial contributions may be made to Perry County Memorial Hospital Foundation, St. Paul Catholic Church, or the Council of Agencies.
