Alfred Harold Wetzel, 92, of Tell City, Indiana, passed away on March 9, 2026, in Carmel, Indiana.
Alfred was born in Tell City to Gilbert Wetzel and Elizabeth (Nuetzel) Wetzel. He graduated from Tell City High School in 1952 and worked at the Tell City Chair Company alongside his brothers, Jim and Bob. Alfred spent most of his life in Tell City before later moving to the Indianapolis area to be closer to family. He was also a lifelong member of the Evangelical United Church of Christ.
In 1967, Alfred married Evelyn Ann (Schipp), and together they shared 29 years of marriage until her passing in 1996. During her illness, Alfred lovingly cared for her with patience and devotion—something his family will always remember.
Alfred lived an active life and enjoyed basketball, bowling, golf, and water skiing. He was a long-time Indiana University fan and, more recently, an Iowa women’s basketball enthusiast. Alfred spent 85 years of his life in Tell City and loved reminiscing about his hometown and snacking on Tell City Pretzels. He was very involved in his grandchildren’s lives, always cheering them on and celebrating their achievements. He also enjoyed listening to big band music.
Alfred was known for his gentle spirit and his gift for making friends wherever he went. He never met a stranger and always had a joke or an Indiana basketball story ready to share.
He is survived by his children, Beth (Wetzel) Hall (Blake) and Bill Wetzel (Hema); and his grandchildren, Anna Hall, Bryce Wetzel, Neel Wetzel, Erin Hall, and Maya Wetzel.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Elizabeth (Nuetzel) Wetzel; his wife, Evelyn; and his siblings, James “Jim” Wetzel, Mary Catherine “Kay” (Wetzel) Hammond, and Robert “Bob” Wetzel.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. CST on Saturday, March 14, at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Tell City.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. CST until the time of service on Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Evangelical United Church of Christ (Tell City) or to the American Cancer Society.
