Betty J. Harris

Betty Jane (Moore) Harris, 99, passed away on July 29, 2023, at her home in Corydon, IN.

She was born on December 26, 1923, in Muddy, IL, the daughter of Jesse W. and Nannie (Garrison) Moore. Betty graduated from Harrisburg (IL)High School and went on to earn her bachelor's degree from Texas Wesleyan University. She was united in marriage to Charles Harris of Boonville, IN, in November of 1962, who passed in December of 1975.

She taught elementary school at Fort Worth, TX, for several years, during which she regularly spent summers visiting family in Tell City. After moving to Boonville, she taught in the Warrick County school system. She began in Yankeetown before teaching second grade many years, first at Clark Elementary and finally, Loge. In her later years she moved to Tell City to be closer to her sister, Catherine. She had most recently lived in Corydon with her niece and dedicated caregiver, Connie Hollar.

Betty was a devout Christian, and a long-time member of First Baptist Church, Boonville, DAR and was active in the American Baptist Women's Missionary. She loved music, and expressed her talent through piano, violin, and voice, especially in church with sisters Marion, Catherine, and Jessie. She enjoyed singing in the church choir, writing journals, reading, and crossword puzzles. In recent years, she became a passionate genealogical researcher.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Charles and siblings, Bill, Mildred, Jessie, Marion, Catherine, and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be 1pm Saturday, August 5, 2023, at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home, with burial to follow in Deer Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11am to 1pm on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at the funeral home with Chaplain George Payocong officiating.
