Burke Scott Obituary

Burke H. Scott, 92, of Tell City, passed away Friday, February 7, 2025, at Scenic Hills at the Monastery in Ferdinand, IN.


He was born in Tell City, IN on January 12, 1933, to the late Irvin and Laura (Boulware) Scott.


Burke was a 1951 graduate of Tell City High School. He served our country as a Lieutenant with the United States Army, living at Fort Benning, GA and Fort Carson, CO. He went on to receive his master's degree in education from Indiana University and a member of the ROTC. During his time at IU, was also a member of the IU Basketball team. Having been a big part of not one but 2 Big Ten Championships in 1953 and 1954, also National Championship in 1953, all under Coach Branch McCracken.


During his teaching career he wore several hats, from educator to coach to guidance counselor. He taught and coached for several different schools including, the Needmore Hilltoppers near Bedford, IN, Plainville Mighty Midgets, St. John's Screaming Eagles in Loogootee, IN, Cascade High School Crusaders near Danville, IN, Plainfield. He also worked for the Indiana Department of Education. Then took on his last teaching job as a guidance counselor and basketball coach at Heritage Hills High School.


He enjoyed golfing, fishing, traveling, especially his vacations to Gulf Shores, hunting Indian artifacts, being with family and friends, and IU basketball.


He is survived by his sons, Kent Scott of Tell City, David Scott of Leavenworth and Jay Scott of Evansville; grandchildren, Seth Scott of Princeton, IN, Rhiannon Scott of Calgary, AB Canada, and Mellisa Scott of Colorado Springs, CO; and his great-grandchildren, Oaklynn, Waylon, Emberlynn, and Adylynn.


In addition to his parents, Burke was preceded him in death by his siblings, Mary Louise Nichols, Charlotte Parker, Ross Scott, Don Scott, Dave Scott, Merill Scott, and Dale Scott.


Funeral Services will be held at 7:00 PM on Monday, February 17, 2025, at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home. A private burial will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery.


Visitation will be from 12:00-7:00 PM on Monday at the funeral home.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Indiana University NIL.
