Eldon Hammack, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at the age of 87 after a life marked by service, dedication, and quiet strength.
Born on July 1, 1937, in Tell City, Indiana, Eldon was the youngest of eight children born to Henry and Mary (Brown) Hammack. Growing up on the family farm with his brothers and sisters—William (Billy), Victor, Hilda, Lucille, John, Duane, and Dewey— Eldon learned the values of hard work, loyalty, and resilience early in life.
He graduated from Tell City High School in 1955, where he proudly played on the school's 1955 Basketball Sectional Championship team. Later that year, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. As an Aircraft Engine Mechanic, Eldon served honorably and with distinction. His commendations include the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Air Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Combat Aircrew Insignia. He was medically retired in 1970 at the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6), leaving a legacy of honor and courage.
On July 2, 1960, Eldon married the love of his life, Eddie Jean (Webb) Hammack. Together, they built a life rooted in love, family, and faith. They were blessed with two children: Danita F. Landers (deceased) and Patrick D. Hammack, who later married Diana (Kolb) Hammack. Eldon was a proud grandfather to Laura (Hammack) Todd, David Landers, and Micheal Landers, and a doting great-grandfather to Isabella Todd, Charlie Todd, and Hazel Landers.
Following his military service, Eldon continued to serve his community in various roles, including as a service station owner, automotive mechanic, and weigh scale operator for Mulzer Crushed Stone in Dale, Indiana. He was known for his mechanical skill, reliability, and steady presence.
Eldon Hammack’s legacy is one of love for family, dedication to duty, and quiet integrity. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday April 25, 2025, at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home with burial to follow in Deer Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00am until service time.
