Helen Myers Obituary

Helen Cecelia Sasse Myers, 93, of Boonville, Indiana, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2020 in Tallahassee, Florida.

Born on December 28, 1926 in Newburgh, Indiana, she was the second oldest child of Lillian Gertrude Hartman and Theodore Bernard Sasse. Many knew her as one of the “Sasse Girls” from the family farm stand. When her mother became ill, Helen, an adolescent, became the caregiver for her younger siblings. She lived through the Great Depression, the flood of ‘37 and World War II. Never one to complain or reminisce, if you asked her about the “good ole days,” she was quick to point out life was better with age.

Helen married Herbert F. Myers in 1950 and together they raised six children, provided a home for several foster children, volunteered regularly for their church, and always stopped to help a stranger whenever the need arose. Helen was active in her community as a 4-H Leader, member of the PTA, and as an election poll volunteer. She attended St. Clement Catholic Church in Boonville and Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Tallahassee.

Helen was creative, hardworking, and compassionate. She canned food, made the family’s clothing and upholstered furniture. She was an independent seamstress and had many clients including Lazarus department store in Evansville. Helen worked tirelessly at the family turkey farm and instilled her work ethic in her children. She always had room in her heart and an extra seat at the table for friends and family. Those closest to her will remember her quick wit, the garden vegetables she shared, the marvelous meals she prepared, and the incredible pies she baked for all occasions.

Helen was preceded in death by her loving husband, Herb, parents, sisters Eva Marie Helmbock and Dorathy Gabel, brother John Joseph Sasse, and son-in-law Keith Peyton. She is survived by seven siblings, Theresa Koetter, Lillian Loveall, Joan Ubelhor, Emily Thompson, Clara Louise Honningford, Sr. Joan Marie Sasse OSB (Martha), Theodore Louis Sasse; her six children Patricia Romig (Robert) of Tallahassee, FL, Robert Myers (Pamela) of Maryville, TN, Rebecca Starke (Stephen) of Tallahassee, FL, Mary Louise Peyton of Evansville, IN, Karen Myers (Steve Chaires) of Spencer, TN, and Laura Engel (Robert) of Boonville, IN. She was blessed with a large family including twelve grandchildren: Jessica, Jennifer, Brian, David, Jon Ryan, Elizabeth, Julia, Elizabeth, Samuel, Tiberius, Rocket, and Sasse; and three great grandchildren, Matthew, Madison and Brooklyn.

A private ceremony will be held November 19, 2020 with a memorial service to be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Clement Catholic Church at 422 East Sycamore Street, Boonville, IN 47601.

The family would like to thank Dr. Paul Katz and the nursing staff at Westminster Oaks Health Care Center for the loving care they provided.
