Joseph Glenn May Obituary

Joseph Glenn May, 96, died on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, in Evansville, Indiana. Glenn was affectionately known as Glennie, Dad, PopPop, Butter and Padnee. He was born on All Saints Day, November 1, 1928, to William and Pauline May in Cloverport, Kentucky in his grandmother’s home, directly across the street from the L & N Train Station. As Glenn wrote in a Share Your Life journal, “I got to go to church on my birthday every year of my life.”

The Mays moved to Tell City, Indiana in Glenn’s infancy. He attended St. Paul Elementary and Tell City High School. After graduation from TCHS, he enlisted in the United States Army. He served in Tokyo, Japan during the Korean War. He enjoyed meeting the people, walking the gardens, and accomplishing his military duties, but chose potatoes over rice for the rest of his life.

On a very early morning, June 23, 1950, Glenn and Margaret Coyle were married in St. Michael Church in Cannelton, Indiana. Glenn was employed in the insurance industry for some time, yet found his niche in sales, retiring from Fischer’s Furniture and Appliance Company after decades of service. Customers appreciated his dry sense of humor, his humility and can-do spirit. He and Margaret reared seven children. A part of his legacy is the generous support he offered all of them in meeting their educational aspirations.

Glenn was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion. He found great purpose in serving in the Honor Guard burial unit of VFW Post 2939. He enjoyed playing golf with buddies, especially the round in which he scored an ace, that hole in one on the Santa Claus course. Glenn was a sports fan and was known to cheer for the Hoosiers, the Irish and the Sooners all in one football Saturday. He had the logos wardrobe to prove it. He was a great cook, his specialties being biscuits and BBQ chicken.

After Margaret’s unexpected death in 2003, Glenn was eventually blessed to find happiness with Lois Schneider. They married and together enjoyed travels to visit children and grands, sharing quiet morning coffees, and caring for family and friends.

Glenn is survived by his daughters, Glenda and husband, Ron Peters; Marsha and husband, Jon David LeClere; Laura and husband, Keith Capito; Myra and husband Jim Wetzel; and sons Neil and wife Kristin; Stuart and wife Lola; Eric and wife, Donett; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean Ann; a brother, Ben; and Glenn’s wife Lois’s daughter Sharla and husband Jim, and son Burke and wife Judy.

Glenn was preceded in death by his first wife Margaret; his second wife, Lois; his parents; sister Maxine and brother Clarence.

The family will greet friends Thursday, July 10, 2025, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home of Tell City.
