Katherine Brown

Katherine M. Brown, 97, of Lamar, Indiana, passed away on August 27, 2026, at Scenic Hills at the Monastery in Ferdinand, Indiana.

She was born on May 3, 1929, in Lamar, Indiana, to the late Werner Andrew and Alta Anna (Held) Foertsch. Katherine married Damon Brown on June 27, 1948, and together they shared 55 years of marriage until his passing on May 25, 2004.

Katherine was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Lamar and was also a member of the church’s Women’s Guild and served on the church council. Her faith and love of music were important parts of her life and service to others. She attended Deaconess Nursing School and later shared her love of music by teaching piano and organ lessons for many years. She also served as the church organist at St. Peter’s for 25 years, using her gift of music to enrich countless worship services.

Katherine was also a dedicated volunteer, giving her time to numerous Red Cross blood drives throughout the years. She had a generous heart and found fulfillment in helping others and being involved in her community.

She enjoyed many of the simple pleasures of life, especially cooking, reading, tending to her flower garden, traveling, camping, and spending time with family and friends. She especially looked forward to preparing Sunday meals for her family, creating traditions and memories that will be cherished for years to come. She also enjoyed her cats, Callie and Tillie, and her weekly visits with her special little friend, Chance.

Katherine lived a full and meaningful life and remained remarkably independent. She was still driving herself as recently as January, a testament to her determination, strength, and independent spirit. Her kindness, love of family, faith, and devotion to others will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.

Katherine will be lovingly remembered by her children, Damona DeCoursey of Huntingburg, Marla (Brian) DeFreese of West Point, and Daren (Tammy) Brown of Lamar, all of Indiana; grandchildren, Kylie (Eric) Lauderdale, Erik Brown, Kelsey (Cory) Menke, J.D. (Liz) DeFreese, Garrett (Michelle) Brown, Rob (Michelle) DeFreese, Morgan (Kyle) Rust, Katelyn (Zach) Smith, Greg (Billie) DeCoursey, and Julie (Sherman) Kays; 12 great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and many family and friends who were blessed to know her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Damon; her parents, Werner Andrew and Alta Anna Foertsch; her siblings, John, Robert, Eugene, and Roland Foertsch; parents-in-law, Everett and Alice Brown; and a son-in-law, James DeCoursey.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, August 29, 2026, at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Lamar, Indiana, with Rev. Katherine Beckett and Rev. Michelle Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will begin at 11:00 A.M. and continue until the time of service at the church.
