Larry Bunner Sr. Obituary

Larry G. Bunner Sr., 71, of Tell City, passed away on Wednesday November 12, 2025, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville, IN.

 

Born in Evansville, IN, on March 4, 1954, he was the son of the late Harry Lee and Barbara Ann (Weible) Opell.

 

Larry was united in marriage to Mary LeRoy on October 23, 2002. He retired after 32 years of service to the Indiana Army National Guard and Army Reserve where he was the Armory Board Manager and did NCO training. He also drove a school bus for Hancock County Schools for over 15 years. Larry was so well loved by the children, he would receive gifts from them on the holidays. He was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous for the past 35 years. Larry also worked with the worldwide ministry, Operation Inasmuch, through Central Baptist Church of Hawesville, KY. He enjoyed fishing, family cookouts, and loved to share his knowledge of the military.

 

Better known by his family and friends as Sarge, Pappaw, Peepaw, and Pop. He was the go-to guy for everything, and he would be the first one to lend a helping hand. Larry became a dad to his granddaughter Kenzie, taking her in at the age of 6 and legally adopting her at the age of 12. He was also embraced by 5 other children who considered him Dad in addition to his 2 sons.

 

Survivors include, the blessings in his life, his wife of 23 years, Mary Bunner; sons, Rob Bunner (Laney) of Hammond, IN, Larry Bunner Jr., Kenzie Bunner of Tell City, Matthew Waninger (Sandy) of Lafayette, Brian Waninger (Melena) of Tell City, Lisa Reynolds (Bob) of Tell City, Nick Waninger (Jennifer) of Fultondale, AL, Chris Gray (Dane) of Louisville, KY,; siblings, Janice Burkes of Simpson, LA, Terry Bunner of Clinton, IN, and Joyce Evans of Washington, IN; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and countless friends.

 

In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his siblings, Jerry Bunner, Mardell Noble, and his grandsons Stephen Waninger and Ethan Reynolds.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home with Brother Brian Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

 

Visitation will be from 2:00 to 7:00pm on Friday, November 14, 2025, and from 9:00am until service time on Saturday at the funeral home.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to Celebrate Recovery or Operation Inasmuch in Hawesville, KY.
