Larry Manley Obituary

Larry Edwin Manley, 88, passed away on August 3, 2025, at his home in Tell City.

Larry was born December 22, 1936, to the late Elsie and Naomi (Dunning) Manley in Evansville, IN. In 1942 they moved to the country three miles North of Newburgh, IN, on Bell Road, and there he grew up.

Larry attended Newburgh schools. He played on the basketball team and graduated from Newburgh High School in the class of 1954. While still a 17-year-old senior in high school, he joined the Marine Corps Reserves and served from 1954 to 1958. At the age of 18 he went to work at Seeger Refrigerator Company, which soon became Whirlpool Corporation. While there he became the manager of manufacturing and materials during his 41 years of employment.

Larry married Ann Kathryn Oberhausen of Tell City in 1956, and together they shared 69 years.

Larry served on the Evansville United Way Allocations Committee and the Evansville Epi-Hab Board of Directors. He served as president of the Evansville East Little League and coached Evansville Babe Ruth league teams. He played in fast-pitch softball leagues and was a member of the Evansville Umpire Association. He served as a president of the Newburgh High School Alumni Association and was active in his class of 1954 reunions.

Larry was an avid reader of Civil War and World War II history books. He loved baseball, was a lifetime Yankee fan, and a sixty-five-year Cardinal fan. He loved watching Indiana and Purdue football and basketball games, watching old movies, and enjoyed 1940's and 1950's music before “Rock and Roll”.

He loved the Christmas season with family and always wanted a big tree and lots of good food. Fittingly his birthday was just 3 days before Christmas, a coincidence that made the season even more special to him. In 1980, Larry and Ann moved from Evansville to Tell City. Later, they purchased the Crafty Nook gift and craft store on Main Street. Larry served 2 terms as Commander of the Perry County American Legion Post 213 and was a volunteer driver taking veterans to VA Hospitals in Louisville, KY. After retirement, Larry and Ann enjoyed traveling to many states and foreign countries.

Larry is survived by his wife, Ann; his children, Mickey (Patti) Manley, Joan (Barb Zwickel) Manley, and Jane (David) Goffinet, all of the Tell City area; his brother, David (Jo) Manley; in-laws, John (Pat) Oberhausen and Louann Oberhausen; seven grandchildren, Sara (Sean O'Gara) Manley, Jessica (Jagat) Bender, Eric (Mariah Wenker) Manley, Kevin Manley, Neal (Athena) Goffinet, Alyson Goffinet, and Hanna (Donovan) Ingle; nine great-grandchildren, Owen, Isabelle, Jack, Eva, Violet, and Henry Bender, Margot and Leo Goffinet, and Miles Ingle; as well as a host of extended family members.

In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his brother Gary Manley and his wife Kris, his in-laws, Tony and Hazel Oberhausen, Mark and Meredith Oberhausen, and Sam Oberhausen.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at 2:00p.m. at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home, with Fr. Bernie Etienne officiating. Burial to follow in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Tell City. Visitation will be from 11:00a.m. until service time.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Sam K. Oberhausen Memorial Scholarship Fund or the Tell City Historical Society.
