Mary (Spencer) Thomas, 88, of Derby, Indiana, passed away on March 8, 2026, at Oakwood Health Campus in Tell City.
She was born at Parkview Hospital in Tell City, Indiana, on January 2, 1938, the daughter of the late Joseph Loren “Bud” Spencer and Louise (Becker) Spencer. Mary was also preceded in death by her sister, Sue (Bill) Feix, and her brother, Joseph “Joe” (Jean) Spencer.
Mary was united in marriage on August 16, 1996, to Robert L. “Bob” Thomas.
Mary graduated from Tell City High School in 1956. She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Leopold, Indiana. Mary was the owner of Corner Country Store in Tell City, and manager of other retail establishments. She also worked as a social worker and activities coordinator at Perry County Memorial Hospital, and later volunteered at Oakwood Health Campus.
Mary enjoyed cooking and entertaining family and friends. She also loved gardening, sewing, and embroidery.
Unable to have children of her own, Mary shared her love with many she considered her “children,” including Clay (Barbara) Ewing of South Bend, Indiana; Kris (Sharon) Ewing of Westminster, South Carolina; Daniel (Paula) Davis of Tell City; David (Kim) Davis of Blytheville, Arkansas; Christina Davis-Cullum of Sikeston, Missouri; and Gertie Terry (Randy) Leinenbach of Kentucky.
In addition to her husband of 29 years, Bob Thomas, Mary is survived by two stepsons, Robert “Bob” Thomas Jr. and Mark Thomas; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and nine very special nieces and nephews whom Mary loved dearly.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Leopold, Indiana, with visitation from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Derby, Indiana. Fr. Luke Waugh will celebrate.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 13, 2026, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Augustine Catholic Church in Leopold, Indiana or the St. Mary Cemetery Fund in Derby, Indiana.
