Norman graduated from Cannelton High School in 1956 and went on to attend Murray State University on a full football scholarship. On July 20, 1957, he was united in marriage to Darel Hess, beginning a loving partnership that spanned 68 years.

He dedicated over 30 years of service to Alcoa before retiring. Norman treasured time spent with his family, whether on outings or at gatherings. He enjoyed fishing, camping at Millstone, and spending time with his dogs. He was an avid viewer of CNN—the channel his television faithfully remained tuned to, as well as a devoted fan of IU basketball and Indianapolis Colts. He also loved listening to Charlie Pride.
