Robert R. "Bob" Day, 87, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2026, at his home in Tell City, Indiana.
Born on April 11, 1939, in Terre Haute, Indiana, he was the son of the late Charles Loran and Dorothy Pearl (McCool) Day.
Bob was united in marriage to the love of his life, Nelda Powell, on December 26, 1966. Together they shared 60 years of love, devotion, and cherished memories.
A graduate of Dale High School, Bob continued his education at Indiana State University, where he earned his master's degree in education. He devoted his life to teaching and inspiring generations of young people. During his distinguished 37-year career with the Tell City-Troy Township School Corporation, he became known as an exceptional mathematics educator who challenged, encouraged, and genuinely cared for his students. Many former students would later say he was the best math teacher they ever had. Bob often remarked, "I never worked a day in my life," a reflection of the joy and passion he found in teaching. Following his retirement, he continued sharing his love of learning by teaching part-time for four years at Ivy Tech Technical College.
Bob was always quick with a joke—or three—and never met a stranger. His warm personality, quick wit, and genuine interest in others, Bob made friends everywhere he went.
Bob was a member of the Tell City Moose Lodge, and the Tell City Masonic Lodge. A devoted student of Scripture, he faithfully followed the teachings of Les Feldick Ministries and spent countless hours studying the Bible on his own, continually seeking a deeper understanding of God's Word. He loved traveling with his family, especially to Gatlinburg, Tennessee and Branson, Missouri.
Nothing brought him greater joy than watching his granddaughters, Emma and Sarah Day, play softball. He was one of their biggest fans and rarely missed a game. Before long, many of their teammates also came to know and love him simply as "Grandpa," a title he cherished. Whether cheering from the stands or offering words of encouragement after the game, he made every player feel valued and supported.
Above all, Bob cherished his family. Those left to honor his memory include his loving wife, Nelda Day; his children, Eric Allen Day (Lisa) of Santa Claus, Indiana, Erica Danielle Day (Kevin) of LaGrange, Kentucky, and Brian Robert Day (Naomi) of Mandan, North Dakota; his beloved granddaughters, Emma Day and Sarah Day; along with extended family and many dear friends.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his sister, Pat Schafer, and his cherished granddaughter, Allison Day.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 27, 2026, at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home with Pastor Dan Hopkins officiating, and Bob's son, Brian Day, sharing words of remembrance. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, 2026, and from 8:30 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Tell City First Baptist Church.
