Ruth Karney, 88, passed away Sunday, February 1, 2026, at Brickyard Healthcare in Tell City.
She was born July 5, 1937, to the late Ferd and Pearl (Hendershot) Hammack. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Ferd Hammack, Maggie Baur, Dorothy Van Hoosier, and two siblings who passed in infancy, Betty and Deloris Hammack; and a son-in-law, Rusty Rainey.
Ruth was united in marriage to Magnus Karney on November 26, 1955. They shared 61 wonderful years together until his passing in 2016.
Ruth enjoyed spending quality time with her family, listening to music, and attending family gatherings. She loved to laugh and have fun and was well known as an excellent cook, especially for her beloved chicken and dumplings.
She is survived by her children, Meg Arnold (Rob) of Newburgh, Roger Karney (Denise Kessans) of Tell City, and Holly Rainey (Paul Werner) of Tell City; five grandchildren, Morgan Carter (Andy), Trent Rainey (Kaydi), Tim Rainey (Erica), Tyler Rainey (Breanne), and Scott Straley (Sonia); nine great-grandchildren, Mason, Jake, and Drew Carter; Addysen, Hadley, Remington, Canyon, Lakelyn, and Breckyn Rainey; and her siblings, Helen Jones of New Albany, Perk Rothgerber of Huntingburg, Kenny Hammack (Carol) of Tell City, and Sue Harris (Harvey) of Tell City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Deer Creek Church Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, February 6, 2026, from 2:00–7:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until service time. Following the burial, the family will gather at the Moose Lodge at approximately noon.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Brickyard Healthcare Activity Fund or Deer Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
